Day One in Brief
Hosts Canada started proceedings on the glass court, but third seeds Malaysia proved too strong as they won three-nil. The higher-seeded teams – USA, France, Hong Kong, Australia, England won the other matches too, but Wales took second seeds England to a decider after a tremendous 3-1 win by Tesni Evans over world champion Laura Massaro.
The afternoon session comprised just two matches, with Egypt and Ireland quickly wrapping up 3-0 wins over New Zealand and China.
In the evening session England, Canada, South Africa, Hong Kong and Malaysia all won 3-0 – as did Wales, although that was after Jenny Haley won the final match against Spain 11-9 in the fifth against Marina de Juan !
In summary then, all the higher-seeded teams won, with 13 of today’s matches finishing 3-0.
